Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!!

Our Valentine Sweetheart Tea was yesterday, February 13th at Alee’s Restaurant.  It was a huge success.  We filled the restaurant to capacity.  Everyone loved the menu, the food and the teas. Also served were raspberry white chocolate chunk scones served with Lemon Curd and Devonshire Cream.  The most popular teas were Love Affair, our chocolate strawberry Rooibos blend, and Cupid’s Kiss, which is our green and white tea blend with passionfruit.  We are planning future events so stay tuned to our blog, Twitter and Facebook fan pages for more information.

Earl Grey and Afternoon Tea are linked to romance and the beginnings of courtship.  In the 19th century Victorian ladies and gentlemen would meet in the afternoon for tea, ordering “tea for two”.  What could be more romantic?

The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Marie Russell was said to have been the originator of the British meal “afternoon tea”. Her afternoon tea was a light meal usually eaten between 3pm and 5pm of cakes and sandwiches paired with tea (usually Darjeeling), the perfect balance and bridge to dinner.

High Tea was defined as a meal eaten later in the day that also includes tea (Earl Grey Tea is a popular accompaniment).  High Tea was usually eaten between 5pm and 6pm.  Also known as meat tea, it was the working classes main meal. Eggs, fish, cakes, sandwiches, cheese, bread, fruits, and meats were consumed.  It was a hearty meal to be sure and often included alcohol (ale) and of course tea.

Today going out to tea, you will find tea service in several forms.  Cream Tea, Light Tea, Afternoon Tea or Full Tea, Royal Tea, and High Tea.

Cream Tea – An anytime treat with scones and a side of Devonshire cream or clotted cream, jam, and pot of tea.

Light Tea – Tea , scones, and sweets

Afternoon Tea or Full Tea –  Tea, savories (tea sandwiches or appetizers), scones, sweets and dessert

High Tea – Would you like that super sized?  Earl Grey works here very well.
